Agility for Your English Foxhound

K-9 Agility is a wonderful way for you and your foxhound to  develop a strong bond.

After Breeze reached her conformation goals, we started her in agility as a method to keep her involved in our dog activities.  Breeze is a American, Canadian and International conformation Champion and we felt agility would be a good venue for her to work in. It keeps her active and she gets to go with us to events....without needing the beauty shop preparation of a conformation show dog.

As with any hound breed, agility training can be a challenging task.  You will need to spend time with your dog developing a trust in them that the obstacles are fun. Short periods of training have worked best for us, as the foxhounds need variety in their routine and can become bored with too much repetition in training.

Spending 15 minutes a couple times a day doing training in your back yard will yield results. As the bond develops, your foxhound will become more responsive to you and be more enthused about doing agility. Breeze truly loves going to training and to agility trials.

Praise, treats, understanding of your dog, treats, sense of humor, treats, commitment, and oh yes, did I mention treats, will make you both worthy competitors.

You can build agility equipment in your garage with a variety of materials and items found around the house. An example would be two chairs and a broom stick used as a jump. Or, those long orange fiberglass flag poles stuck in the ground and used as weave poles. Setting up a course in your yard can be easily done without much investment. You will need to locate a trainer who understands the temperament of a hound to help make you successful.
