Barbara Hamlin wrote a year ago. It's embarrassing to find her letter again now. I should note that Barbara sent along a photograph from the Wedding-Ashmore Barbara also sent along a couple clippings about the Community Read in Brunswick and Barbara wrote:

wedding. Barbara's daughter, Jennifer (see note below) was our best woman that
day. And Barbara and Norman Hamlin hosted Nancy and me at their summer place in Maine
long ago and recently invited us to return.
Bath, Maine, that she and her book club helped initiate. One of the clippings (from the
Brunswick Times Record of February 7, 2002) promotes the project to read and discuss
To Kill a Mockingbird. Local libraries and town offices had copies to lend and "public discussion
groups, panels, workshops, theatrics, writing, and artistic activities were planned throughout the
community." (See Steve Slosberg's description of Connecticut's version.)
| My personal reading seems to have concentrated on the clash of mid-east and eastern cultures lately--mostly the clashes of their cultures and ours. The Spirit Catches You--And You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman is a sad, sad story. Unfortunately, it's a true story.
House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III also points out how difficult it is for other cultures to fit into our American life. Most recently, I've finished Ali and Nino by Kurban Said, sent me by daughter Jennifer. It's only recently appeared after being out of print. It's also about culture clash--this time between two Eastern cultures. All three of these books helped me understand the clashes, but none gives any answers or solutions. Are there any? P. S. I never heard of Wilkie Collins, but I am anxious to read Barbara Kingsolver's Prodigal Summer. Norman certainly enjoyed John Adams. |
Thank you, Barbara for your good words and good work inspiring the Town Read. With your
kind patience, I'll work at getting my filing system more organized and fewer late contributions
like yours and David Rodaughan's.
