November Reprise

Dividing Line

Almost without pause after putting Fearless Jones aside, I picked up a second book: Devil's Claw by J. A. Jance. It was another of those books Nancy had picked up at the library. I'd brought some books along to read, but these strange new ones were somehow more appealing. This book, like last fall's Jance novel, was a good story. For me, there was less empathy than with Mosley's character, but I enjoyed my hours with this book. It was complex enough to keep me interested and the characters intriguing enough for me to care about. J. A. Jance goes on my list as equal to Nevada Barr, Stephen Greenleaf, and Dana Stabenow. That's a rank below Walter Mosley and Ellis Peters, but well worth reading.

It's been a long while since I took the time to read for pleasure like this. I began to notice how restful it was and how relaxed I was feeling after a stressful winter of teaching and writing. I began to suspect that Nancy had convinced me to get to Sidetrack as a way to yank me out of that rut for a few days. It worked.
