A Second Opinion on Chinua Achebe

Dividing Line

After reading Chinua Achebe's Home and Exile last fall, I dropped the book on the desk of a former colleague at Hopkins High School, Carrie Lucking. Outside of school, she's wrapped up in planning her wedding. In school, Carrie's wrapped up in chairing the social studies department, representing the faculty on the union board, and teaching Advanced Placement European History. I figured she could use a dose of something not administrative and not Eurocentric. The results were wonderful.

"I'm sorry that I have been so slow to respond to messages. I have gone and gotten myself into too many obligations again, and I am really paying the price.

"BUT...I had to e mail you as soon as I could. I read your passionate thoughts on Achebe's newest book in Reading and I was inspired to move it to the top of my book pile. (Your leaving it for me helped too!:) This weekend I began and finished the book in complete awe. The style of writing and power of thoughts contained in those short pages were deeply meaningful.

"At times, I found myself laughing at his quick wit, and later finishing a paragraph and feeling dumb because Achebe's ability to communicate his thoughts eclipses my own to such an amazing degree. The book was awesome.

"Thank you so much for leaving it for me and for writing so beautifully about it to inspire me to read it."

Awesome is Carrie's favorite positive superlative. Thank you for that. And thanks for letting us all read it.

Write Tell a little bit of the world what you think.
